Ethernet |
||
| Ethernet is a Local Area Network (LAN) standard, IEEE 802.3, developed by Xerox, DEC, and Intel that connects devices over twisted pair copper wires, fiber, or wireless LANs.
Ethernet networks run at various speeds. For example, 10BASE-T passes traffic at speeds up to 10 mega bits per second (Mbps) while Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T) transmits at up to 100 Mbps and Gigabit Ethernet operates at a speed of 1,000 Mbps, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet runs at up to 10 billion bits per second. Devices on an Ethernet network are connected to switches that use the Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection (CSMA/CD ) protocol. Ethernet got its name from "luminiferous (light-transmitting) ether" once thought to pervade the universe. Internet over Ethernet is becoming a popular service as Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) evolve and root out from telecom provider core networks in densly populated metropolitan areas. |
